NC Sierra Club Statement on the House Commerce Committee’s Approval of S 10

Raleigh - Today the NC House’s Commerce Committee gave a favorable recommendation to a Proposed Committee Substitute (PCS) for S 10.  The PCS was very different from the version of S 10 that passed the Senate and excluded any alteration of the Utilities Commission. However, an amendment to the PCS, offered by Rep. Hager, revived the Senate proposal to purge all members of the Utilities Commission, though not until July 1.

Molly Diggins, state director of the NC Sierra Club offered the following statement:

“We applaud the members of the House Commerce Committee for restoring scientific expertise to the environmental commissions and for showing regard for the importance of continuity to the effective operations of state boards and commissions.”

“Still, there is an appropriate time to replace members on these important commissions, and that is when their terms expire. Under the House version of the bill, there are still many current commission members will lose their seats for no more reason than that they were appointed by a previous administration or legislature.”

“While the new version of S 10 is much improved, we are concerned by an amendment offered by Rep. Mike Hager, and approved by the committee, that would require all members of the NCUC to represent business related interests.  We are also concerned by the timing of all new appointments with respect to the upcoming Duke Energy rate case hearings.”
