Please stop holding Horseshoe Farm Park hostage! I have been following the Horseshoe Farm Park issue and can't understand why the City Council has not acted to adopt the Master Planning Committee's Draft Plan. This plan is a good compromise that will create a popular and highly successful river, nature and arts park for the entire region to enjoy. I urge you to consider my requests: 1 - Please separate Horseshoe Farm Park from the issue of active recreation. With its limited access, abundant wildlife, and significant natural heritage, Horseshoe Farm is simply INAPPROPRIATE for high intensity active recreation. Please pursue the many other locations for sports and traditional community centers in NE and North Raleigh and create a special park at Horseshoe devoted to river, nature and arts enjoyment. The environmental education and arts community center proposed in the Draft Master Plan, and no more, is just right for this park! 2 - Please adopt the Master Planning Committee’s Draft Plan with environmental stewardship recommendations right away. I believe the City should be a better steward of our most precious natural areas. 3 - With adoption of the Master Plan, reclassify Horseshoe Farm as a “Special” or “Metro” Park. Horseshoe Farm does not fit the traditional “Community Park” definition and never will. This is a regionally significant park for its natural heritage and should be classified and designed with this in mind. Our City needs to protect and enhance our highest quality natural areas for the public's enjoyment just as much as provide active recreation opportunities for our citizens. People of all ages and abilities -- not just sports lovers -- will use and enjoy a park like the one envisioned in the Committee's Draft Plan. Please let this place remain special, and act now to place active recreation in other, more appropriate locations. Thank you very much!
