HORSESHOE FARM PARK

The Capital Group Sierra Club submitted a position statement to the City of Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Greenway Advisory Board emphatically advocating for a natural city park at Horseshoe Farm Park.  Horseshoe Farm Park's unique and significant natural heritage, abundant wildlife and cultural resources are not compatible with active recreation in the form of basketball courts, gymnasiums and increased parking.

Our views have been echoed by an overwhelming majority of the public and other environmental and community organizations.  Unfortunately, at their July 20 meeting, the Parks Board rejected public opinion and voted into the Master Plan a 24,000 square foot Indoor Active Recreation Center with double gymnasium and 2 outdoor basketball courts.  The Parks Board Chair said that the public input "did not represent the real public."  If that were true, why did a recent poll confirm that 69% of Raleigh residents support keeping Horseshoe Farm Park primarily a nature park (click here for more information on the poll results)?

The Plan has been put on hold while the Public Works Committee explors active recreation alternatives.  For more information on Horseshoe Farm Park and the protracted public input process, visit:  http://www.horseshoefarm.org/.
