Linville Gorge is one of our favorite places. For a site dedicated to all things Linville, and with a companion Yahoo group for the latest trail news see this link.
"About the MST…the Mountains to Sea Trail (MST) of North Carolina is a 935+ mile trail consisting of footpaths, roads, and state bike routes. This trail started in 1973 when the North Carolina General Assembly passed the North Carolina Trails System Act. FMST's efforts are underway so that one day a complete foot trail will reach across the state, from the Mountains to the Sea." (all information courtesy of the MST website). See this link for more info on the MST in NC.
"The Appalachian Trail Conservancy is a volunteer-based, private nonprofit organization dedicated to the conservation of the 2,175-mile Appalachian National Scenic Trail, a 250,000-acre greenway extending from Maine to Georgia. Our mission is to ensure that future generations will enjoy the clean air and water, scenic vistas, wildlife and opportunities for simple recreation and renewal along the entire Trail corridor.
Formerly known as the Appalachian Trail Conference, the ATC is an 80-year-old organization whose roots are traced to the vision of Benton MacKaye, who convened and organized the first Appalachian Trail "conference" – a gathering of hikers, foresters and public officials – in Washington, D.C., in 1925. For information on the Appalachian Trail Conservancy see this link.
"The Potomac Appalachian Trail Club is a volunteer-based organization, headquartered in Vienna, Virginia. The PATC was founded in 1927 by the men and women who planned and built the Appalachian Trail. The club now manages more than 1,200 miles of hiking trails in the Mid-Atlantic region, along with cabins, shelters, and hundreds of acres of conserved land." (courtesy of the PATC website). See this link to the PATC.
Hikingupward.com: “We are a group of avid hikers who enjoy the wonderful forests and parks in the Mid-Atlantic States. Having hiked many of these mountains over the years, we wanted to share the trails and routes we've found with others who might enjoy them as well.” (all information courtesy of HikingUpward.com). For more information see this link.
Backpacking Lightweight: There are several sites now for light weight backpacking and this is one of our favorites. “If you engage in backpacking, at some point, you may consider packing a lighter load. That consideration was the main reason that Backpacking Lightweight was created in 1996, and it continues to be its primary focus. Since then, however, the Lightweight Backpacking & Hiking website has grown to include a vast repository of resources useful for year-round backcountry safety & enjoyment.” (All information courtesy of backpacking.net).
"If you have even a passing interest in reducing the weight of your pack, this is the place to go. It's a 'no-brainer' bookmark to be sure." Backcountry Gear Limited.
