Where's Karl... Ultra-Marathon of the AT?

When:

Tuesday, Aug 05, 2008
Contact Karl

Details:

"On August 5, 2008, uber ultra-runner Karl Meltzer will set off on the biggest race of his life. His challenge: to run the entire length of the 2,174-mile Appalachian Trail in less than 47 days. Definitely daunting. Absolutely grueling. Probably insane. But when he does it, he'll rule the AT as the guy who conquered it, all of it, the fastest on two feet. This is going to be Man vs. Nature, Man vs. Self, Man vs. Clock -- and it's going to be good" (courtesy of WheresKarl.com)

We question the sanity of running the AT, much less the concept of conquering it, and certainly the mind-set of the PR guys that wrote the intro. In the past 100 years or so, we've climbed a lot of mountains, including many first ascents, but we've yet to conquer one. While we can do without the concept of conquering nature, we congratulate the spirit of this soon-to-be effort.

For our trips we like to slow down, examine nature, and form bonds with like-minded folks, not sprint by it in a cloud of blood, sweat, and tears.

However, it may be interesting to follow Karl's trivails, therefore we offer this up for your consideration. So that we can find him, Karl will be using the new SPOT GPS navigation system that interactively provides location information to their website. See the link at the bottom of the page to find Karl.

This is not a Sierra Club Outings and is offered only for the education of our membership. If you have any comments please send them to the address below.

Directions:

Start at Springer Mountain and head north! Oops, Karl's going the other way, so switch it!
