Meeting Presentation: Melissa Coe - Piedmont Wildlife Rehab

Oct 13, 2009
Kathleen Clay Edwards Environmental Library, 7pm

Where does an injured wild animal go for rehab? Melissa Coe, President of Piedmont Wildlife Rehab, will discuss how her hobby evolved into a non-profit that takes in more than 300 wild animals a year. Melissa cares for creatures that are often overlooked and ignored. She has rehabbed a variety of animals, regularly gets birds such as cardinals, sparrows, finches, robins, bluebirds, woodpeckers, chimney swifts among others. Mammals that have spent time with her include squirrels, bunnies, opossums, chipmunks, groundhogs, flying squirrels, even a baby mouse!

We'll learn what a day in Melissa's life is like and what has to happen before an incapacitated animal can survive in the wild. We may even meet one of her clients! Join us Tuesday November 10 for a fun and fascinating program.

Sierra Club meetings are held the second Tuesday of each month from 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm at the Kathleen Clay Edwards Family Branch Library. Come share refreshments and social time at 7:00.

"Bold Moon" cleanup

The Piedmost Plateau Group of the Sierra club adopted the "Bold Moon" open space and recently got together to clean it up. In the process, we:
  • Picked up one dumpster's worth of trash, and another dumpster's worth of scrap metal
  • Cleaned out a dilapidated dwelling for a controlled burn
  • Removed over 50 fence-posts, to be used for a community garden in Greensboro

Meeting Presentation: Healing Seekers - Madagascar Expedition

April 14, 2009
Kathleen Clay Edwards Environmental Library, 7pm

Healing Seekers is a multimedia project that explores remote regions of the world in search of plants, living organisms and therapies that represent centuries-old medical traditions. The multimedia project promotes awareness about the origins of medicines, recognizes ancient medical traditions, and highlights the importance of preserving environments where these organisms originate, so that new cures can be discovered and lives saved.

John James of the Healing Seekers made a return trip to Madagascar last December, and will share his experience and findings with us. John will also discuss some of Madagascar's ecological issues and Healing Seekers' efforts to educate people about the value of threatened areas such as parts of Madagascar (more info at www.healingseekers.com.)

Greensboro Advisory Group on the Environment Appointed

On May 7th, 2008 Mayor Johnson appointed, and City Council approved, the members of a newly formed Advisory Group on the Environment! The Group’s mission will be in the areas of bringing forth initiatives for reducing pollution, conserving resources, improving energy efficiency, and moving towards a more sustainable local economy.

The group’s co-chairs are Bob Powell and Joel Landau. Its members are primarily people who have been active in local sustainability efforts. Our thanks go to Mayor Johnson for initiating the idea and moving forward with it. Steve McCollum was also instrumental in bringing the idea to fruition. One of the hopes for this group is that it will be a focal point for coordinating and publicizing the various sustainability efforts now underway around the City.

The Committee members are:

  • Bob Powell and Joel Landau as Co-Chairs.
  • District 1: Art Davis and Maurice Allen
  • District 2: Debbie Leiner and Joe Venable
  • District 3: Carolyn Allen and Eric Hoekstra
  • District 4: Tom Clary and Kim Yarbray
  • District 5: Tom Duckwall
  • Marlene Sanford as a representative of TREBIC.
  • Someone to be appointed by the Chamber of Commerce.
  • Maybe someone from the Greensboro Merchants Association.

About half of the Advisory Group are Sierra Club members.

    Red Cross First Aid Class

Our Group is considering hosting a Red Cross first aid class if there is sufficient interest. The class will deal with emergency response and basic first aid. These are skills which ideally everyone should learn, especially if you have kids or participate in outdoor or fitness activities. It is important to develop these basic skills before an emergency arises. There is also a wilderness skills version available for those of you that hike, bicycle, backpack or canoe/kayak in the backcountry. If you are interested please contact me for more information at: twoodswalker@triad.rr.com or call 580-0510.
