Capital Group Campaign News

2008

Capital Group
Endorsements

This page provides information about the candidates endorsed by the Sierra Club.  The Sierra Club has researched, interviewed, and endorsed candidates we think will be strong protectors of our environment. There are several steps that we hope you will take. FIRST, please be certain to vote. SECOND, please vote for those candidates the Sierra Club has endorsed. THIRD, help the endorsed candidates by becoming involved in their campaigns as a volunteer and through your financial support. When you volunteer, be certain to mention that you are a Sierra Club member.

You can easily determine your voting district. Start at the State Board Of Elections "Voter Lookup" web page. Follow the link for "Show me my Voter Information." Next enter your name and county as requested. You will then reach a page with data about your voter registration. Look for the link "My Districts" to see a list of the districts in which you vote and the link "My Sample Ballot" to see a sample of the ballot that will be given to you when you vote.

In announcing the endorsement of Obama, Carl Pope, the Executive Director of the Sierra Club, said "We believe Senator Obama is the change our nation needs – he is the change we need, the leader who will put America on the path to a clean energy economy that will create and keep millions of jobs, spur innovation and opportunity, make us a more secure nation, and  help us solve global warming.” Other links of interest: Transforming Energy, High Gas Prices.

RESEARCH AND VOTING

Several sources are available to get more information about the candidates. We hope that you will use the Sierra Club endorsements as a guide. Check out the candidates' campaign web pages. The names of endorsed candidates above are links to their campaign web sites. For those endorsed candidates who are incumbents, check out their Legislative web sites. These sites provide a list of sponsored bills and votes. A general web search will also return links to news about the candidates.

Consider voting early to avoid the lines on November 4. Find information about early voting locations (also known as one-stop voting) and times here.

Not registered to vote? You can register to vote AND vote at the same time at all of the early voting sites in Wake County. See the details, a list of acceptable identification, and voter registration form here.

This election has a long ballot. It may be helpful to print a sample ballot, mark it, and take it with you when you vote. To print a sample ballot specifically for yourself start at the State Board of Elections "Voter Lookup" web page. Follow the link for "Show me my Voter Information." Next enter your name and county as requested. You will then reach a page with data about your voter registration. Look for the link "My Sample Ballot" to see a sample of the ballot that will be given to you when you vote.

SIERRA POLITICAL COMMITTEE

Every issue that affects our lives is determined ultimately by some elected official. One of the major reasons that the Sierra Club is involved in the political process is to become a stakeholder in the process.   We also see the need to change that process at times and that also motivates some of our political decisions. When we endorse candidates we declare our interest and involvement in the political process. When we meet with them to question their votes we hold them accountable and demonstrate our commitment.

Want to get involved? Do you have an environmental problem that you are passionate about? Have you heard about a public hearing but were reluctant to speak or even to attend? Overwhelmed by the complexity of governmental processes ?  Join our Political Committee to learn more about the legislative process and how you can make a difference.  The Sierra Capital Group Political Committee meets the first Wednesday of each month at 6:30 pm. Contact:  political-cg@sierra-club-nc.org to become involved.
