Protecting against (and lessening) climate change in NC

The 20th Century was marked by expansive growth and major shifts in the way that people live, work, and interact with the environment. Moving forward into the 21st Century, the challenge facing North Carolina is to undo the damage wrought by poor planning, a lack of foresight, and - far too often - reactionary rather than proactive leadership.

North Carolina has a remarkable opportunity to both guide the future of the state and emerge as a leader in the Southeast and the country on environmental and economic issues. To paraphrase from the 1992 Presidential campaign: It’s the green economy, stupid.

Investing in clean energy and reducing global warming pollution are two sides of the same coin. But we must move quickly to embrace clean and renewable energy sources and improve how efficiently we use our energy. Increased use of green, renewable energy sources will cut rates and increase quality of life, lower our greenhouse gas emissions, and improve air and water quality.

Not preparing for climate change is not an option. Doing nothing threatens our air, our water, our children, and the future of our state from its beautiful coast to its temperate mountains. The innovative and entrepreneurial spirit that has catalyzed North Carolina’s economic success is well suited to offset and mobilize against the effects of climate change on our state.

The Sierra Club will work to:
  • Encourage the shift away from coal power
  • Support incentives for renewable energy and promote efficiency mandates
  • Promote farsighted and comprehensive policies for those areas likely to be highly impacted by the effects of climate change.
