Our Issues

The Sierra Club is over one hundred years old, and in our history in the state, the North Carolina Chapter has worked to pass groundbreaking environmental legislation on both the local and national level. Past issues range from putting an end to hog waste pollution to protecting the integrity of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Check out our top issues for spring/summer 2009.

  • Cliffside coal plant expansion: the proposed boiler at Duke Energy's Cliffside coal station will inject an additional 5.5 million tons of CO2 in our air annually.
  • Expand the use of interconnected transit options and rail: a seamless, modern, and efficient transit system linking highways, public transportation, freight, passenger rail, and coastal ports is a real possibility in NC.
  • Beat back legislation that would overturn sound, science based coastal policies: North Carolina has lead the nation in its strong stance against hardened beach structures since 1985. While protecting intended homes from beach erosion, structures like seawalls, jetties, and groins often place houses and beaches downdrift at far greater risk of erosion..
