Good Growth in North Carolina
Census estimates have North Carolina’s population reaching 12 million (from around 9 million currently) by 2025. What’s more, out of the 50 states and the District of Columbia, North Carolina is the third “most moved to” state, has several of the fastest growing counties in the country, as well as the city (Raleigh) with the most internal migration in the country from 2007-8.
What is clear is that North Carolina needs comprehensive, responsible and fair economic policies and environmental protections to handle all the people moving to the state. In short, we need “good growth.”
We have an opportunity in this state to achieve ambitious goals that will see increased cooperation among environmental groups, the business community, and economic development interests. The Sierra Club will be working to:
- Promote better, smarter transportation options to offer interconnected public transit, relieve congestion, and foster strong regional economies. As a state, we’re almost entirely dependent on roads, highways, and the personal automobile for transportation; that has to change.
- Educate the public on energy efficiency and advocate for increased access to funding for efficiency projects.
